Forgesmith is a Minecraft Java Edition mod built on the Fabric API, focused on overhauling the smithing system entirely. The ambition was never a handful of reskinned weapons with tweaked stats — it was an actual industrial process, with different materials, different forging traditions, and different paths through the craft.
The material system goes deeper than finished alloys. Before you get steel, you get a production chain: iron sand, pig iron, coke, limestone, slag — the actual inputs to real-world smelting, modelled as in-game resources with poor and rich quality tiers. The forge progression reflects that: Tatara Furnace, Wind Furnace, Blast Furnace, each unlocking different materials and processes. Tamahagane Steel comes from the Japanese tatara tradition. Crucible Steel has its own production path. Carbon Steel and Tool Steel sit alongside them with their own durability and sharpness characteristics. Materials degrade over time too, so maintenance is part of the loop.
Enhancements add another layer on top. Clay tempering for durability. Gilding for utility effects. The choices you made in the forge were supposed to carry all the way through to how your equipment performed and lasted.
Weapons get actual moves too — melee and ranged. Swing, stab, block, parry. Not a different number on a damage tooltip, but a different way of fighting depending on what you made and how you made it.
The mod was shelved mid-development when a significant Minecraft update was announced that would rework ore textures, world generation, and material progression. Rebuilding around that felt more worthwhile than shipping against it. A revival and overhaul is planned.
